Life can be difficult. Things don’t always go as planned. Finding inspiration during these times can get us back on track. Sometimes just one thought can provide the energy and courage to fight through adversity.
For me, at times, this courage comes from thinking of my personal heroes – people who accomplished great things under difficult circumstances, people who put their dreams above their fears…and won.
Four heroes inspire me every time I think of them. Three you’ll know, and one you won’t.
The first is Mother Teresa, who devoted her life to caring for the poorest of the poor. Second, Helen Keller had every excuse to give up on life, yet she persevered and became an inspiration to millions. The third is Abraham Lincoln, who failed in two businesses and lost six elections before becoming the greatest president of the United States.
My fourth hero is Ricky Johnson. I only met him once, back when I was a sophomore in college, but I’ll never forget him.
Nothing had gone right that hot summer day in Indiana. I was selling dictionaries door-to-door, and by 11 that morning, I still hadn’t sold a book, I’d gotten two people out of bed, and I’d just been bitten by a German shepherd. Not a good day!
I dejectedly knocked on the door of a large frame house and was surprised to be greeted by a big smile and an invitation to enter. After Mrs. Johnson and I chatted for a minute or so, I began showing her the book. As I gave the presentation, she would say, “I’ll bet Ricky would like that feature” or “Ricky was just asking me about that word.”
Soon she said, “Let’s go see what Ricky thinks.” I followed her back to a small room, where I saw a 13-year-old boy lying in bed. His legs were withered from polio. He looked through the dictionary and said, “Mom, I know this will help me with my school work.” Then he asked me if I’d sold many books and where I went to college.
We talked for a few minutes, and then with eyes that were sparkling and a smile I will never forget, he said, “You know, Mac, I’ve never met anyone I didn’t like. I like my teachers and my classmates…They’re so good to me. They even made me a special ramp to help me get up and down the steps.” His last words as I left were, “Mac, someday I’m going to college just like you – I’ll guarantee it.”
I drove away from Ricky’s house with a lump in my throat, a tear in my eye, and a warm, wonderful feeling inside, and I went on to have my best sales day of the summer. It had taken a 13-year-old boy to make me quit feeling sorry for myself – and I’ve never forgotten his wonderful attitude about life.
So often we worry about what we don’t have and don’t spend enough time being thankful for what we do have. Most of us are very blessed, but sometimes it takes a hero to remind us.

Sometimes it can feel that heroes are few and far between, but that usually happens when we close our eyes or fail to notice the abundance of inspiration around us. I recently did a radio interview with a person who created a film documentary about “A Hero On Every Block”. He traveled around the country finding heroes everywhere. We have them in our homes and in our neighborhoods, if we will just make it a point to notice them. I appreciate what Mac is doing to call our attention to the inspirational stories and lives of those around us.
Great article!!
It is indeed very important to have role models that will help us improving our ways, our communities our world day after day.
In fact such heroes will make the world a better place to be.
We have a wonderful hero who through his unconditional love was and still able to transform ugliness, cruelty and misery into beauty, compassion and happiness.
I really hope for all to know him.
His name is Jesus.
What an inspiring story to help me remember it’s all about our attitude in life! Ricky could have been bitter and angry; instead he was an inspiration to you and now your readers.
Thank you for sharing this story.
Wow, a very moving story about Ricky Johnson. Thank you for sharing.
I am Deaf myself and I am also trying to focus on my strengths rather than weaknesses (like I cannot hear)
I learned about Hellen Keller when I was 10 years old when I lived in Kiev, Ukraine (I moved to US at age 18) She also is my role model.
I just formed the Deaf MasterMind group with 6 other Deaf professionals who are also very passionate about life and has a high desire to serve and succeed.
I just found your website and this blog last night and I am definitelly going to share this site to my colleagues.
I LOVE this! It’s exactly what I am looking for. Books, videos, quotes of inspiration and the like, that we could share and pass on to our people.
Thank you for all of your great work, support and services.
The best always!

Sometimes its hard for me, because I’m not a patient person I need things right away. So if I plan something one day and it doesn’t go as planned I get frustrated and mad and I start hurting people’s feelings. I know that’s not a right thing to do, but it’s not in my hands. But then my mom alway’s says, God never forgets you, he does what he does for a reason…
Your right, it takes one little thing to inspire you to accomplish more. You should never give up and always put your dreams above your fears. Think about your heros and what did to accomplish great things then you will become motivated to accomplish your dream.
All it takes is one person to motivate you to do something and that something that you achieve can change your life forever. Meeting new people can help you see a different perspective on life and may help you in certain tasks; they can become one of your heroes.
I completely agree with what you have written. We truly don’t realize how blessed we are until someone tells us. The story about Ricky Johnson was very touching and very inspirational.
When life isn’t going the way you planned, it is nice to have a hero or inspiring figure to look up to. With the knowledge of what the person accomplished, it can inspire us to work harder while having a much better outlook on a gloomy situation. With the right influences in life, you can accomplish a great deal, and even make the world a much better place!
everyone needs a hero to get though those hard times in our lives. sometimes it takes a while for people to find a hero or someone to make them stop feeling sorry for themselves. sometimes its people who have disabilities or have bigger problems in their life, to make a difference in someone elses life from not being sorry for themselves and doing stuff even though they cant really do anything.

Hey Mac,
Inspiring story… I believe that in order to love others, we have to learn to love ourselves! Our strengths and weaknesses.
When we acomplish that, we begin to see the wonderfulness in others.
Thank you.
Sometimes wisdom can be found where you least expect it.
