This is the first post in a new series. Each Monday will bring a nugget of inspiration from our founder Mac Anderson. This week’s post is entitled Manage your attitude. Enjoy!
After more than thirty years in business, I’m convinced that the difference in success and failure is not how you look, not how you dress, not how you’re educated…but how you think.
It’s impossible for me to overstate the importance of maintaining a positive attitude. On the other hand, it’s impossible to understate the difficulty in actually doing it. Staying positive is not easy, and it’s a very personal thing. But it can be done. I can only share what works for me and hope that you can relate to my experience.
First on my list is exercise. Without question my levels of motivation and energy are tied to exercise. Have you seen those long strands of Christmas lights with about one hundred little white lights on each strand? What happens when one of those bulbs becomes loose? They all go out. They shut down. That’s what happens to me when I don’t exercise. It’s my top "stress buster."
Second on my list is to live with gratitude. William James, one of the fathers of modern psychology, said, "The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter their life by altering their attitude." Abraham Lincoln said, "People are as happy as they make up their minds to be."
We are blessed in so many ways, and we need to remind ourselves continually of those blessings. When we wake up each morning, we have choices to make: We can choose our socks, choose our underwear, and most importantly, we choose our attitudes.
The third key for me to manage my attitude is to laugh at myself and laugh with others. Many people take themselves far too seriously. As kids we laugh a lot, we dream a lot, but then we grow up and we become a heart attack waiting to happen!
Researchers have investigated why some people can’t cope and found three reasons:
- Low self-esteem
- Living in the past
- Can’t laugh at themselves
In fact, one study indicates that we need a minimum of twelve laughs a day just to stay healthy. Laugh at yourself! Laugh with your friends, your family, your co-workers. It will keep you going, keep you healthy, and keep you motivated.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackWow, what a great email on a crazy Monday!! I am learning the power of positive thinking and exercise also. I am 59 years old and I finally “get it” that I can choose my attitude each day instead of the other way around. I’t wonderful. You have really inspired me to be a better person and my co-workers and family would thank you also.

The words are beautiful and powerful. Along with positive thinking I believe the love of mankind, the desire to provide a hand-up, never to overtly try to make another human doubt themselves is a path we must walk, but the journey must include one’s spiritual beliefs or the positive thinking will only last until the next bump in the road.

Christmas Eve, surrounded by friends I only knew for 3 years, yet I knew I was with family more than friends. My 3 year old boy picked up a “Karaoke” microphone and he sang to our delight. He made up words he can’t even pronounce and he sang all the way through. Everyone was laughing but he was determined to bring a smile to everyone’s face especially dads. He came up and said, “that was for you dad.”
The three year old didn’t mind people laughing at him - he was determined to bring laughter to his dad. It was the greatest christmas gift ever - laughter!
I am almost 81 years old, I live with my 4 Yorkies in our home. I am busy all the time. I mow, I plant flowers, I volunteer at the hospital and I am healthy, happy and do the things you do. The best thing a person can do for themselves, is to do all you can for those around you but still maintain your healthy open mind. My little dogs were homeless and abused . They are not anymore and they are just one example of what kindness can do.

The 4th reason people have trouble coping is 4. Trying to live tomorrow today.
Wonderful and powerful insights. Yes, its true that thought precedes all our actions and if one can think positive it works wonders. Added to this, its the determination and guts to act upon one’s convictions which truely seperates winners from losers. At 45, I am in to ethical selling and traning for two and half decades, and Joe’s lines are really inspiring.
I love this message! I have been lucky in that I have always believed in the power of positive thinking. It makes life so much easier to take. I find myself always trying to profess this to people around me, and I really feel like you can become who you hang around. Most of my friends and family are also positive thinkers and the ones that are not, I hope I can be a positive image to help them see that living a positive, optimistic life is wonderful!
